Magento is a free and open source CMS platform which is basically used to develop e-commerce websites.
In general, in an e-commerce website, once a customer purchases the item, the item is delivered to customer’s desired address. So, you do have to visit physical stores to purchase you item. These items or products are uploaded and managed by admin of the website.
Magento has released 2 major versions so far, Magento 1 and Magento 2. Current version of Magento, which is Magento 2, is primarily written in PHP programming language. It uses other PHP frameworks such as Laminas and Symfony.
Magento comes in two major editions, Magento Open Source and Magento Commerce. Open Source edition comes free of cost while you need to pay to use Commerce edition. Commerce edition is also available as platform-as-a-service.
If you want to develop a small to medium range website in Magento then open source edition has good enough features to get started with. Migration from Open source to Commerce edition is also possible.
